LNG carriers have been an efficient and clean ship segment compared to other types of ships and they generally have a low carbon footprint. But there is an increasing regulatory pressure to reduce GHG emissions that also impact the maritime industry. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has implemented short term measures to push for further decarbonisation by means of the new Ship Energy Efficiency (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII). The regulations entered into force in January 2023. Other local regulations such as the European Union’s “Fit for 55” package will increase the pressure on shipping companies and charterers to reduce CO2 emissions.
