Natural gas plays a crucial role in today’s energy markets, being responsible for a remarkable 23% share of the global energy mix. Furthermore, natural gas plays a pivotal role in achieving the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG #7, which aims to “ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all”. Natural gas spurs economic growth, promotes social advancement, addresses energy poverty, and improves air quality. As the cleanest fossil fuel, natural gas contributes to climate change mitigation, in particular through coal-to-gas switching, and effectively supports the variability of renewable energies. Natural gas has the potential to be more than just a transition fuel, but a destination fuel.
